TBili stands for Total bilirubin, a laboratory test abbreviation.
Sum of unconjugated and conjugated bilirubin, the yellow pigment produced when red cells break down hemoglobin. Adult values are about 0.1 to 1.2 mg/dL, and jaundice becomes visible above roughly 2.5 to 3 mg/dL; causes include hemolysis, Gilbert syndrome, liver disease and bile duct obstruction.
Example: TBili 6.8 with a dilated CBD on ultrasound; GI consulted for ERCP.
Usage notes
Also written T bili, Tbili or TB. Gilbert syndrome, an inherited and harmless reduction in bilirubin conjugation affecting a few percent of people, causes mild unconjugated rises during fasting or illness. Newborn jaundice is assessed with age-specific charts rather than adult ranges. Bilirubin is part of the MELD and Child-Pugh scores for liver disease severity.
