Super PAC stands for Independent expenditure-only political committee, a political abbreviation.
Political committee that may raise unlimited sums from individuals, corporations and unions and spend unlimited amounts on ads supporting or opposing candidates, provided it does not coordinate with campaigns or give money directly to them. It must report its donors to the FEC.
Example: A super PAC backing the governor spent $40 million on ads in the early primary states.
Usage notes
Super PACs emerged in 2010 after the Supreme Court's Citizens United v. FEC decision and the appeals court ruling in SpeechNow.org v. FEC. Donors can obscure their identities by giving through nonprofit groups that are not required to disclose contributors. AP style writes "super PAC" with a lowercase "super".
