1. Federal Election Commission

Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations

Enforces federal campaign finance law, setting contribution limits, requiring disclosure of donors and spending and administering public funding of presidential campaigns. The independent commission has six members, no more than three from the same party.

Example: According to FEC filings, the campaign raised $12 million in the third quarter.

Congress set up the FEC in 1974 amendments to the Federal Election Campaign Act after Watergate. Because it needs four votes to act, partisan deadlocks are common. Its online database of itemized contributions is widely used by journalists, while state and local campaigns are regulated under state law instead.

2. Fecit (made it) (fec.)

Writing & Everyday · Latin Abbreviations

Follows an artist's or craftsman's name on paintings, prints, sculpture, clocks and scientific instruments to claim authorship. It reads as "[name] made this."

Example: Below the image the plate is lettered "J. Smith fec.," indicating that one artist both designed and engraved it.

Fecit is the third-person perfect of Latin facere, "to make." Related lettering includes invenit (inv., designed it), pinxit (pinx., painted it), delineavit (del., drew it) and sculpsit (sc., engraved it). The plural fecerunt appears when several makers collaborated. Clockmakers and instrument makers often engraved their names with fecit and the city, such as Londini fecit.
