TFR stands for Temporary flight restriction, an aviation abbreviation.
Airspace temporarily closed or restricted to most aircraft, announced by NOTAM, around events such as presidential travel, wildfires, space launches, disaster areas and large stadium events. Violating a TFR can bring certificate suspension, fines and an interception by military fighters.
Example: A TFR with a 30-nautical-mile radius goes up for the presidential visit, so the banner-towing flight has been canceled.
Usage notes
US stadium TFRs cover a 3-nautical-mile radius up to 3,000 feet above ground for qualifying major league, NFL, NCAA Division I football and major motor-racing events. Presidential TFRs usually have a 10-mile inner core where most general aviation is banned and a 30-mile outer ring with entry rules. Drone operators must obey TFRs too.
