1. Statim (immediately)
Medical · Prescription Abbreviations
Order priority meaning a medication, test or intervention must be done at once, ahead of routine work. Hospital policies commonly expect a STAT medication to reach the patient within about 15 to 30 minutes of the order.
Example: Give furosemide 40 mg IV STAT and recheck oxygen saturation in 30 minutes.
From Latin "statim", "at once". Usually written in capitals and pronounced as a word ("stat"), and it has entered everyday English as slang for "right away". Hospitals distinguish STAT from "ASAP" and "NOW" orders, which have longer target times. A STAT order is normally a single dose unless a recurring schedule is written separately.
2. United States Statutes at Large (Stat.)
Law & Legal · Legal Citation Abbreviations
Official chronological compilation of every law and concurrent resolution enacted by Congress, along with proclamations and reorganization plans, published by the Office of the Federal Register. Unlike the subject-arranged U.S. Code, it prints each law as passed, in the order enacted.
Example: The Inflation Reduction Act, Pub. L. No. 117-169, 136 Stat. 1818 (2022), amended the tax code.
Cited by volume and page, as in 136 Stat. 1818. For titles of the U.S. Code not enacted as positive law, the Statutes at Large are the legal evidence of the law and prevail over the Code. The Bluebook calls for a Statutes at Large citation for provisions that were never codified. Volume 1 begins with the laws of 1789.
