TID stands for Ter in die (three times a day), a prescription abbreviation.
Instruction to give a drug three times in a day, usually spread across waking hours, for example with breakfast, lunch and dinner. It differs from q8h, which requires doses exactly eight hours apart, including overnight.
Example: Amoxicillin 500 mg PO TID x 10 days for acute otitis media.
Usage notes
Latin "ter in die". Also written t.i.d. or tid; British prescriptions more often use "tds" (ter die sumendum, "to be taken three times a day"). Hospital default administration times for TID orders vary but often fall around 0900, 1300 and 1700 or 0800, 1600 and 2400. When drug levels must stay steady, prescribers write q8h instead.
