So. 2d stands for Southern Reporter, Second Series, a legal citation abbreviation.
Southern Reporter series spanning 1941 to 2008, covering appellate decisions from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi. It contains most twentieth-century case law from those states, including Florida landmark rulings on torts and criminal procedure.
Example: Hoffman v. Jones, 280 So. 2d 431 (Fla. 1973), adopted comparative negligence in Florida.
Usage notes
Louisiana decisions also appear here, although as a civil-law state Louisiana gives individual decisions less formal weight than common-law states, relying instead on a consistent line of cases (jurisprudence constante). Write it with a space, "So. 2d", following the Bluebook rule for multi-letter abbreviations.
