STAI stands for State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, a psychology abbreviation.

Questionnaire of 40 items that separately measures state anxiety, how anxious a person feels right now, and trait anxiety, a stable tendency to experience anxiety. It is among the most used anxiety measures in research.

Example: State anxiety on the STAI rose before the public speaking task, while trait scores stayed constant.

Usage notes

Charles Spielberger and colleagues developed the STAI, first published in 1970, with the revised Form Y in 1983. The state-trait distinction influenced research on stress, test anxiety and health. A children's version also exists.
