SQE stands for Solicitors Qualifying Examination, a legal profession abbreviation.

Centralized assessment for qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales, introduced in 2021. Candidates must pass SQE1, multiple-choice tests of functioning legal knowledge, and SQE2, practical skills such as advocacy, interviewing and drafting, and complete two years of qualifying work experience.

Example: She passed SQE1 last January and is booked to sit SQE2 after her work placements.

Usage notes

Introduced by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, with the first SQE1 sitting in November 2021. It replaces the route through the Legal Practice Course and training contract, though transitional arrangements continue for those already on that path. A law degree is not required, but candidates need a degree or equivalent qualification.
