SDO stands for Staff duty officer, a military term abbreviation.
Officer or senior NCO who represents the commander after duty hours at a battalion, brigade or installation headquarters, monitoring incidents, receiving reports and alerting leaders in emergencies.
Example: The SDO called the battalion commander after the vehicle accident on post.
Usage notes
An NCO counterpart, the staff duty NCO (SDNCO), often works alongside the SDO. In the Navy and Marine Corps, the command duty officer (CDO) and officer of the day perform similar functions.
