SOW stands for Statement of work, a contract abbreviation.
Document defining the specific deliverables, tasks, timeline, acceptance criteria and pricing for a project performed under a broader services agreement. In consulting, IT and government contracting, each new project typically gets its own SOW.
Example: Change requests beyond the SOW will be billed at the hourly rates in Exhibit B.
Usage notes
A master services agreement (MSA) sets the general legal terms once, and each SOW is incorporated by reference; the contracts usually say which document controls if they conflict. In federal procurement the SOW appears in Section C of the solicitation, and agencies may use a performance work statement (PWS) that describes required outcomes rather than tasks.
