SEZ stands for Special economic zone, an economics abbreviation.
Designated area within a country where business and trade rules differ from the rest of the country, typically offering tax breaks, simplified customs, relaxed regulations and ready infrastructure to attract investment and boost exports.
Example: Shenzhen grew from a small border town into a megacity after becoming one of China's first SEZs in 1980.
Usage notes
China's zones, created under Deng Xiaoping, are the best-known examples, alongside zones in India, the UAE and Southeast Asia. India's SEZ Act of 2005 set up its current framework. Critics note that SEZs can divert investment rather than create it and may offer weak labor protections.
