CategoriesBusiness & Finance

U-6 stands for Broadest unemployment rate (U-6), an economics abbreviation.

Most comprehensive US measure of labor underutilization, adding to the officially unemployed the marginally attached workers, including discouraged workers who have given up looking, and people working part time for economic reasons. It typically runs several percentage points above the headline rate.

Example: U-6, which includes involuntary part-timers, stood at 7.7 percent compared with headline unemployment of 4.2 percent.

Usage notes

U-6 is sometimes called the "real unemployment rate," though the BLS treats U-3 as the official measure. It reached a record of about 23 percent in April 2020. The gap between U-6 and U-3 tends to widen in downturns.
