1. Sickle cell trait

Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations

Carrier state in which a person inherits one sickle hemoglobin gene and one normal gene, usually causing no symptoms. It affects about 1 in 13 Black or African American babies in the US and is common in people with ancestry from malaria-endemic regions.

Example: Newborn screen shows FAS pattern consistent with SCT; parents counseled on genetic implications.

The trait protects against severe malaria, which explains its high frequency in parts of Africa, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and India. Although usually benign, it is linked to exertional collapse under extreme conditions, blood in the urine and a rare kidney cancer, renal medullary carcinoma. The NCAA began requiring trait status for Division I athletes in 2010. In transplant medicine SCT means stem cell transplant.

2. Stem cell transplant

Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations

General term for transplanting blood-forming stem cells, used interchangeably with bone marrow transplant and HSCT in clinical notes and patient education. Autologous SCT uses the patient's own cells, while allogeneic SCT uses donor cells.

Example: Myeloma in VGPR after induction; collecting stem cells for SCT in May.

Peripheral blood stem cells are collected by apheresis after mobilization with growth factors such as G-CSF, sometimes with plerixafor. Recovery of white cells, called engraftment, typically occurs about two to three weeks after infusion. In newborn screening and hematology SCT can also mean sickle cell trait, so the context of the note matters.
