HSCT stands for Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.

Transplant of blood-forming stem cells from the patient (autologous) or a donor (allogeneic), collected from bone marrow, peripheral blood or umbilical cord blood. High-dose chemotherapy or radiation (conditioning) is given first to destroy diseased marrow and, in allogeneic transplant, suppress immunity.

Example: Allogeneic HSCT for high-risk AML in first remission, reduced-intensity conditioning.

Usage notes

Allogeneic transplants rely partly on the graft-versus-leukemia effect, in which donor immune cells attack remaining cancer, but they carry the risk of graft-versus-host disease. Unrelated donors are found through registries such as the US National Marrow Donor Program. Half-matched family (haploidentical) transplants have expanded access for patients without matched donors.
