1. Strategic Air Command
Military · Military Unit and Organization Abbreviations
US Air Force command that controlled the nation's long-range nuclear bombers and land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles from 1946 to 1992, the core of US nuclear deterrence during the Cold War. Its headquarters was at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.
Example: During the Cuban Missile Crisis, SAC kept a portion of its bombers airborne around the clock.
Gen. Curtis LeMay commanded SAC from 1948 to 1957 and shaped its culture of readiness and alert. Its motto was "Peace Is Our Profession." SAC was disestablished in 1992, with its forces split between Air Combat Command and Air Mobility Command and its strategic role passing to US Strategic Command.
2. Senior Aircraftman
Military · British Military Rank Abbreviations
RAF rank above leading aircraftman, marked by a three-bladed propeller badge. Senior aircraftmen are experienced tradespeople, and technicians may hold the variant Senior Aircraftman Technician, written SAC(T).
Example: SAC Brown marshalled the Typhoon into its shelter after the sortie.
The next promotion is to corporal, the first RAF non-commissioned officer rank. Women hold the title Senior Aircraftwoman. In US military history, SAC means Strategic Air Command, the Cold War nuclear bomber and missile command, an entirely different meaning.
3. Sacrifice bunt
Sports · Baseball Abbreviations
Bunt that advances a runner at the cost of the batter being thrown out, credited when the scorer judges it intentional. A sacrifice does not count as an official at-bat.
Example: He laid down a SAC to move the runner to second in the ninth.
Also written SH (sacrifice hit). The sacrifice bunt has declined sharply since analytics showed it usually lowers a team's expected runs. National League pitchers bunted often before the universal designated hitter arrived in 2022.
