CategoriesMedical

S-ICD stands for Subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, a cardiology abbreviation.

Defibrillator placed entirely under the skin along the left side of the chest, with a lead running beside the breastbone instead of through the veins into the heart. It avoids complications of transvenous leads, such as infection spreading to the heart and lead fractures.

Example: Young patient with HCM and no pacing needs: S-ICD implanted to avoid transvenous leads.

Usage notes

Because it cannot pace the heart except briefly after a shock, an S-ICD is unsuitable for patients needing bradycardia pacing or antitachycardia pacing. The FDA approved the first system in 2012. Patients are screened beforehand to make sure their surface ECG will not cause oversensing. Extravascular ICDs with a lead under the sternum are a newer alternative.
