RWMA stands for Regional wall motion abnormality, a cardiology abbreviation.
Segment of heart muscle that moves less than normal (hypokinesis), not at all (akinesis) or outward (dyskinesis) on echocardiography or other imaging. A pattern matching one coronary artery's territory suggests ischemia or prior infarction.
Example: Echo: new RWMA of the anterior wall and apex, concerning for LAD territory ischemia.
Usage notes
Echocardiographers score 16 or 17 left ventricular segments in a standardized model to localize abnormalities to coronary territories. A new RWMA during a stress test indicates ischemia, while one present at rest may be scar or "stunned" muscle. Takotsubo syndrome causes abnormalities that extend beyond a single coronary territory. Sometimes shortened to WMA.
