1. Reps in reserve

Sports · Fitness and Exercise Abbreviations

Number of additional repetitions a lifter could have done before failure at the end of a set. Training to "2 RIR" means stopping two reps short of failure.

Example: Last set: 10 reps at 1 RIR, then move on to accessories.

RIR is the inverse of the strength-training RPE scale: RPE 9 equals 1 RIR. Research suggests most muscle growth occurs in sets taken within a few reps of failure. Beginners tend to underestimate how many reps they have left.

2. Regional internet registry

Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations

One of five organizations that allocate IP addresses and autonomous system numbers within a world region: AFRINIC (Africa), APNIC (Asia-Pacific), ARIN (North America), LACNIC (Latin America and the Caribbean) and RIPE NCC (Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia).

Example: The hosting company applied to its RIR for a block of IPv6 addresses.

RIRs receive large blocks from IANA and allocate them to ISPs and organizations. Their public WHOIS databases show who holds a given address range. ARIN and RIPE NCC ran out of freely available IPv4 space in 2015 and 2019 respectively, leaving waiting lists and transfer markets.
