RTT stands for Round-trip time, a networking abbreviation.
The time for a packet to travel from sender to receiver and for the reply to come back, usually measured in milliseconds with ping. RTT is the main component of perceived latency and limits how quickly TCP connections can ramp up their speed.
Example: The new region cut RTT for Australian users from 180 ms to 30 ms.
Usage notes
Light in optical fiber covers about 200 kilometers per millisecond, so distance sets a hard floor: a New York to London round trip cannot fall much below about 55 ms. TLS 1.3 and QUIC were designed partly to cut the number of round trips needed before data flows. Gamers usually call the same measurement "ping".
