RDP stands for Remote Desktop Protocol, a networking abbreviation.
Microsoft's protocol for viewing and controlling a Windows computer's desktop over a network, used by IT support, remote workers and administrators of Windows servers. It listens on port 3389 by default.
Example: Never expose RDP directly to the internet; connect through the VPN or a gateway instead.
Usage notes
Introduced with Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition in 1998, based on the ITU T.120 family of standards. Internet-exposed RDP is one of the most common entry points for ransomware, and the 2019 BlueKeep vulnerability allowed attacks without any login at all. Microsoft and third parties offer RDP clients for macOS, iOS, Android and Linux.
