1. Retrieval-augmented generation

Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations

A technique in which an AI system first searches a knowledge source, such as company documents or a vector database, and then gives the most relevant passages to a language model so its answer is grounded in that material. It reduces hallucinations and lets models use private or current information without retraining.

Example: The HR assistant uses RAG over the employee handbook, so every answer cites a policy section.

Introduced in a 2020 paper by Patrick Lewis and colleagues at Facebook AI Research. A typical pipeline splits documents into chunks, embeds them as vectors, retrieves the closest chunks for each question and adds them to the prompt. Answer quality depends heavily on retrieval, so hybrid keyword-and-vector search and reranking are common. In project reporting, RAG means red-amber-green status.

2. Red, amber, green

Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations

Traffic-light status rating used in project reports and dashboards: green means on track, amber means at risk or minor problems, and red means serious problems needing intervention.

Example: The project's RAG status went from green to red after the data migration failed.

Americans often say "red, yellow, green." Reports that look green at the top but hide red details are nicknamed "watermelon projects." Clear criteria for each color help avoid optimistic reporting. In artificial intelligence, RAG means retrieval-augmented generation.
