1. Quarter to date
Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations · also used in measurement
Cumulative figure from the start of the current quarter, calendar or fiscal, up to today, used in sales pipelines, budget tracking and fund performance reports. It shows progress toward quarterly targets and guidance.
Example: QTD bookings of $18 million leave the sales team needing $7 million in the final three weeks.
Public companies sometimes give QTD trading updates at investor conferences when a quarter is partly complete. QTD figures follow the fiscal quarter, which may not match calendar quarters. Related forms include MTD and YTD.
2. Quoted (qtd.)
Writing & Everyday · Citation and Bibliography Abbreviations
Introduces an indirect source in MLA citations, showing that a quotation was taken from another author's work rather than the original, as in "(qtd. in Smith 45)." It tells readers the writer did not consult the original.
Example: Lincoln reportedly called her "the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war" (qtd. in Reynolds 12).
APA uses "as cited in" for the same purpose, and Chicago uses "quoted in." Style guides recommend finding the original source whenever possible, because secondhand quotations can be inaccurate. The famous Lincoln remark to Harriet Beecher Stowe, for example, comes from family tradition rather than a contemporary record.
