1. Pixel (px)

Units & Measurements · Data Unit Abbreviations

The smallest addressable element of a digital image or screen, and a unit in web design and graphics software. Image dimensions such as 1920 × 1080 px and CSS sizes such as 16 px are written with it.

Example: Upload a profile photo at least 400 × 400 px.

The word pixel blends "picture element" and was first published in 1965 by Frederic Billingsley of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In CSS, 1 px is a "reference pixel" of 1/96 inch, so on high-density screens one CSS px may cover several physical pixels.

2. Post exchange

Military · Military Term Abbreviations

Retail store on an Army post selling clothing, electronics, groceries and household goods tax-free to service members, retirees and families. The Army and Air Force Exchange Service runs PXs worldwide.

Example: Pick up some batteries at the PX before we head to the field.

The War Department authorized post exchanges in 1895, replacing private post traders. The Air Force version is the BX, the Navy's the NEX and the Marine Corps' the MCX. PX profits help fund morale, welfare and recreation programs. In common speech PX is sometimes used for any military store.

3. Prognosis (Px)

Medical · Medical Documentation Abbreviations

Shorthand for prognosis, the expected course and outcome of a disease. It appears in specialist notes, family meeting summaries and palliative care documentation.

Example: Px guarded given multiorgan failure; family meeting set for 1500.

Px is also used for physical examination in some notes and for prophylaxis in others (more often ppx), so the meaning must be read from context. Prognosis is often described as good, fair, guarded or poor, or with survival estimates.
