1. Rest and recuperation

Leave program that gives deployed service members a break from a combat or hardship tour, such as the 15-day mid-tour leave granted during year-long deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, with travel home paid by the government.
Example: He flew home on R&R in time for his daughter's birth.
In general usage R&R means "rest and relaxation." During the Vietnam War, R&R trips took troops to destinations such as Hawaii, Sydney, Bangkok and Hong Kong. Some services also used "rest and recreation." The ampersand form is standard; AP style writes R&R.
2. Rest and relaxation
Writing & Everyday · Everyday Abbreviations
Refers to time off for rest and recreation after work or stress, such as a vacation or a quiet weekend. In the military it means leave granted to troops away from combat duty.
Example: After finishing the audit, the whole team took a long weekend of R&R at the lake.
The military expansion is usually "rest and recuperation" or "rest and recreation"; US forces in the Korean and Vietnam wars took R&R trips to cities such as Tokyo, Hong Kong and Sydney. The civilian sense of relaxation followed. In music, R&B means rhythm and blues, a different abbreviation.
3. Report and recommendation
Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations
Proposed ruling prepared by a federal magistrate judge on a dispositive matter, such as a motion to dismiss, summary judgment or a habeas petition, which a district judge then accepts, rejects or modifies. Parties may file objections before the district judge decides.
Example: Defendants have 14 days to object to the R&R recommending denial of their motion to dismiss.
Authorized by 28 U.S.C. § 636(b)(1). The district judge reviews de novo any portion to which a party properly objects, and failing to object can forfeit appellate review in many circuits. Some courts call it findings and recommendations (F&R). Outside law, R&R means rest and relaxation.
