Prof. stands for Professor, a title and honorific abbreviation.

Academic title for a university faculty member holding the rank of professor, placed before the name in correspondence, introductions and directories. In Britain and much of Europe it is reserved for the most senior academic rank, while in the US it often covers any faculty member.

Example: Prof. Hughes will hold office hours on Tuesdays from 2 to 4 in Room 310.

Usage notes

AP style never abbreviates the word and lowercases "professor" before a name; the abbreviation appears mostly in lists, addresses and salutations. US ranks run assistant, associate and full professor. In Germany and Austria the stacked form "Prof. Dr." is common on letterheads and nameplates. The plural is Profs.
