1. Mexico
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Mexico, the most populous Spanish-speaking country, has Mexico City as its capital, MEX as its alpha-3 code, .mx as its domain and the peso as MXN. Locale settings use es-MX for Mexican Spanish.
Example: Cross-border orders shipping to MX must include a tax ID for customs clearance.
Mexico's official name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos (United Mexican States). CDMX abbreviates Ciudad de México. Sports bodies use MEX as well.
2. Mail exchanger (record)
Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations
Tells sending servers which mail servers accept email for a domain, each with a priority number; lower numbers are tried first. Switching email providers mainly involves changing a domain's MX records in DNS.
Example: Update the MX records to Google's servers and mail will start arriving in Gmail within hours.
Defined in RFC 974 in 1986. An MX record must point to a hostname, not directly to an IP address or a CNAME. A domain with no MX record may still receive mail at the address in its A record, but that fallback is unreliable. MX is also the ISO country code for Mexico.
3. Mx. (gender-neutral courtesy title) (Mx.)
Writing & Everyday · Title and Honorific Abbreviations
Gender-neutral courtesy title used in place of Mr., Ms., Mrs. or Miss, chosen by many nonbinary people and by others who prefer not to signal gender. UK government departments, banks, universities and utilities widely accept it, and US forms increasingly offer it.
Example: Please address correspondence to Mx. Jordan Ellis, Student Services Coordinator.
Usually pronounced "mix" or "mux." Its earliest known printed use is in the US magazine Single Parent in 1977, and Oxford's online dictionary added it in August 2015. British usage omits the period (Mx), as with Mr and Ms. When a person's preference is unknown, writers can use the full name without any title.
4. Management (Mx)
Medical · Medical Documentation Abbreviations
Shorthand for management, the plan for treating and monitoring a condition. It is more common in British, Irish and Australian notes, where "Ix" and "Mx" often appear together.
Example: Mx: IV fluids, analgesia, NBM, surgical review in morning.
NBM, "nil by mouth", is the British counterpart of NPO, so UK management plans can look unfamiliar to American readers. Mx can also stand for mastectomy in surgical notes, so the specialty matters. American notes usually say "Plan" instead.
