1. Production possibilities frontier
Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations
Curve showing the maximum combinations of two goods an economy can produce with its available resources and technology. Points on the curve are efficient, points inside it are inefficient and points outside it are unattainable.
Example: Moving along the PPF from guns to butter shows the opportunity cost of military spending.
Also called the production possibility curve (PPC). Its typical bowed-out shape reflects increasing opportunity costs, as resources suited to one good are shifted to another. Economic growth shifts the whole frontier outward.
2. Public Provident Fund
Business & Finance · Personal Finance Abbreviations
Government-backed long-term savings scheme in India with a 15-year lock-in, a government-set interest rate revised quarterly, and tax-exempt contributions, interest and maturity proceeds. Annual deposits range from ₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh.
Example: I deposit in my PPF every April to earn interest for the full year.
Its "exempt-exempt-exempt" tax status under the old income tax regime makes it a staple of conservative Indian portfolios. Partial withdrawals are permitted from the seventh financial year, and the account can be extended in five-year blocks after maturity.
