1. Rotator cuff repair
Medical · Surgical Abbreviations
Reattaches torn rotator cuff tendons to the humerus, usually arthroscopically with suture anchors, for tears causing pain and weakness that persist despite therapy. Recovery involves several weeks in a sling followed by months of rehabilitation.
Example: Arthroscopic double-row RCR; sling for 6 weeks, PT protocol to follow.
Large, chronic and retracted tears heal less reliably, and severe tears in older adults may be treated with reverse shoulder replacement instead. Smoking and diabetes increase retear rates. Full recovery commonly takes four to six months or longer.
2. Responsible conduct of research
Education & Academia · Academic Abbreviations
Training in research ethics, covering topics such as data management, authorship, peer review, conflicts of interest, mentoring and research misconduct. The NIH and NSF require RCR instruction for trainees and researchers supported by their grants.
Example: All graduate students on the training grant must finish RCR training in their first year.
The NIH has required RCR instruction for trainees since the late 1980s, with in-person components expected. The America COMPETES Act of 2007 extended requirements to NSF-funded undergraduates, graduate students and postdocs. Online modules such as CITI are commonly used to satisfy part of the requirement.
