NSQIP stands for National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, a surgical abbreviation.
American College of Surgeons program that collects risk-adjusted, clinically abstracted data on surgical outcomes at participating hospitals, allowing comparison of complication and mortality rates with national benchmarks. Its online risk calculator estimates a patient's chance of complications before surgery.
Example: ACS NSQIP report flags our SSI rate after colectomy as higher than expected.
Usage notes
The program originated in the US Department of Veterans Affairs in the 1990s and was adopted by the American College of Surgeons for private hospitals in the 2000s. Trained surgical clinical reviewers abstract data from charts rather than relying on billing codes. Pronounced "N-squip".
