PGE1 stands for Prostaglandin E1 (alprostadil), a drug abbreviation.
Prostaglandin given by continuous IV infusion to keep the ductus arteriosus open in newborns with ductal-dependent congenital heart disease until surgery. Alprostadil is also injected into the penis or used as a urethral pellet for erectile dysfunction.
Example: Duct-dependent lesion on echo: PGE1 0.05 mcg/kg/min; intubation equipment at bedside.
Usage notes
Apnea occurs in a substantial minority of infants on PGE1, especially at higher doses, so they are monitored closely and may need ventilation. Fever, flushing and low blood pressure are other effects. Misoprostol, a synthetic PGE1 analog, is used to protect the stomach, induce labor and treat postpartum hemorrhage.
