PACOM stands for United States Pacific Command, a military unit and organization abbreviation.

Former name of the US combatant command for the Pacific region, used from 1947 until May 2018, when it became US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM). Older documents and news coverage still use the name.

Example: In 2015 PACOM sent warships near artificial islands built in the South China Sea.

Usage notes

The rename did not change the command's area of responsibility, which already included most of the Indian Ocean. PACOM's commanders, always Navy admirals, also directed the Pacific Fleet in the command's early decades. Historical references to CINCPAC refer to the commander in chief of the command.
