OPORD stands for Operation order, a military term abbreviation.
Directive issued by a commander to subordinate leaders to coordinate the execution of an operation, organized in the standard five paragraphs: situation, mission, execution, sustainment, and command and signal.
Example: The platoon leader issued the OPORD at 1400 using a terrain model built in the dirt.
Usage notes
Pronounced "OP-ord." Small-unit leaders memorize the five-paragraph format from their first leadership courses. Joint publications sometimes write OPORD as OPORDER. Orders are often preceded by a warning order (WARNO) and later modified by fragmentary orders (FRAGOs).
