OPLAN stands for Operation plan, a military term abbreviation.
Complete, detailed plan prepared for a possible contingency, such as the defense of an ally, including forces, deployment timelines and logistics. Combatant commands maintain OPLANs for major scenarios.
Example: OPLAN 5027 lays out the US and South Korean response to an invasion from the North.
Usage notes
Pronounced "OP-plan." OPLANs differ from concept plans (CONPLANs), which are less detailed, and from operation orders, which direct execution. Many OPLANs are classified and periodically updated as threats change. Revisions are approved by the secretary of defense for the most important plans.
