ODM stands for Original design manufacturer, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Company that designs and builds products that other firms sell under their own brands, often customizing an existing design. Many laptops, phones, servers and routers from well-known brands are created by Asian ODMs.
Example: The brand's new budget laptop is a lightly modified ODM design also sold by two other companies.
Usage notes
Taiwanese firms such as Quanta, Compal and Wistron design and assemble a large share of the world's laptops. ODMs differ from OEMs and contract manufacturers in owning the design work. Cloud companies increasingly buy servers directly from ODMs, skipping traditional brands. "White-label" products are typically ODM designs sold with minimal changes.
