OCEAN stands for Openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, a psychology abbreviation.
Acronym for the Big Five personality traits, the dominant model of personality in psychological research: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism (emotional instability). Each is a continuous dimension on which people vary, rather than a type.
Example: On the OCEAN profile she scored high in conscientiousness and low in neuroticism.
Usage notes
The traits emerged from the lexical hypothesis, that important personality differences become encoded as words; Ernest Tupes and Raymond Christal identified five factors in the 1950s and 1960s, and Lewis Goldberg named them the "Big Five." Also arranged as CANOE. The traits are moderately heritable and fairly stable across adulthood.
