MMPI stands for Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, a psychology abbreviation.
Most widely used and researched standardized test of adult personality and psychopathology, consisting of hundreds of true-false statements. It is used in clinical diagnosis, forensic evaluations, custody disputes and screening for high-risk jobs such as police officers and pilots.
Example: The MMPI results showed elevated depression scales but valid response patterns.
Usage notes
Psychologist Starke Hathaway and psychiatrist J. C. McKinley published it at the University of Minnesota in 1943. The MMPI-2 (1989) has 567 items, and the shorter MMPI-3 (2020) has 335. Validity scales detect inconsistent responding, exaggeration and attempts to appear unusually healthy. Interpretation requires trained professionals.
