Wavefront Technologies created OBJ in the 1980s for its Advanced Visualizer software. Its simplicity makes it a common lowest-common-denominator exchange format, though it lacks animation, rigging and scene data. In programming, .obj also denotes compiled object code produced by compilers, an unrelated use of the extension.
