neut. stands for Neuter, a grammar and dictionary abbreviation.
Labels neuter grammatical gender, the third gender found alongside masculine and feminine in languages such as German, Latin, Greek and Russian. It is used in bilingual dictionaries and grammars.
Example: Mädchen (n. neut.) German "girl," taking the article das despite referring to a female
Usage notes
Grammatical gender does not always match meaning: German Mädchen is neuter because nouns ending in the diminutive suffix -chen are neuter. Old English had a neuter gender, which survives in the pronoun "it." Bilingual dictionaries often shorten it to n., so context separates it from "noun."
