NEF stands for Nikon Electronic Format, a file format abbreviation.
Raw image format of Nikon digital cameras, used since the professional D1 of 1999 and still used by Nikon's Z-series mirrorless cameras. It stores sensor data along with camera settings and a preview image.
Example: Send me the NEF files, not the JPEGs, so I can edit the white balance.
Usage notes
Nikon cameras offer uncompressed, lossless compressed and lossy compressed NEF options, and newer models add "High Efficiency" raw modes that cut file sizes considerably. Nikon's own NX Studio software processes NEF files for free. The extension is .nef, and some Nikon compact cameras use the related NRW format.
