NSSI stands for Nonsuicidal self-injury, a mental health & psychiatry abbreviation.
Deliberate damage to one's own body tissue without suicidal intent, such as cutting, burning or hitting, often used to relieve intense emotional distress. It is most common in adolescents and young adults and, while not intended to be lethal, raises the risk of later suicide attempts.
Example: NSSI by cutting forearms 2–3 times weekly for emotion relief; DBT skills group referral.
Usage notes
DSM-5 lists NSSI disorder as a condition for further study rather than a full diagnosis. Asking about wound care and providing nonjudgmental support are recommended. Dialectical behavior therapy has the strongest evidence for reducing self-harm. Pronounced as letters.
