NLE stands for Non-linear editing, a software abbreviation.
Video and audio editing in which any frame can be accessed and rearranged at any time without altering the source footage, as in Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer. The term covers both the method and the software.
Example: We cut the documentary in an NLE and exported the final timeline to the colorist.
Usage notes
Before NLEs, editors physically spliced film or copied tape from one machine to another in sequence, which is linear editing. Avid's Media Composer, introduced in 1989, made non-linear editing standard in film and television. Editing is non-destructive: original camera files remain untouched while the project stores the edit decisions.
