LTS stands for Long-term support, a software abbreviation.
Designation for software versions that receive security and bug fixes for an extended period, typically several years, rather than being superseded quickly. Businesses and servers favor LTS releases for stability.
Example: We're staying on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS until 2029 instead of upgrading every six months.
Usage notes
Ubuntu publishes an LTS release every two years in April with five years of standard support, extendable with a paid Ubuntu Pro subscription. Node.js and Java also designate LTS versions, and the Linux kernel maintains several LTS branches. Non-LTS releases bring new features sooner but are supported only briefly, often nine months or less.
