1. Nebraska

Geography & Places · US State Traditional Abbreviations

AP and Bluebook abbreviation for Nebraska, used in datelines (KEARNEY, Neb.), party labels (R-Neb.), sports agate and citations to the Nebraska Reports. The Government Publishing Office writes Nebr. instead.

Example: LINCOLN, Neb. — The unicameral legislature adjourned without passing the property tax bill.

Nebraska's postal code changed from NB to NE in 1969 to avoid confusion with New Brunswick, Canada; neither Neb. nor Nebr. belongs on mail. Omaha does not stand alone in AP datelines, so it is written OMAHA, Neb.

2. Nebulizer, nebulized (NEB)

Medical · Medication Route Abbreviations

Treatment in which a liquid medicine is turned into a fine mist by a jet or mesh nebulizer and inhaled through a mouthpiece or mask over several minutes. Bronchodilators, inhaled steroids, hypertonic saline and some antibiotics are given by neb.

Example: DuoNeb 3 mL NEB q6h while awake; albuterol NEB q2h PRN.

Usually written "neb" in lowercase and pronounced as a word. Nebulizers need no coordination, so they suit young children and very sick patients, but studies show metered-dose inhalers with spacers work as well for most asthma attacks. Respiratory therapists in US hospitals often administer scheduled nebs.
