Usage notes
Ringgit means "jagged" in Malay, referring to the serrated edges of Spanish silver dollars that once circulated in the region. After the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Malaysia pegged the ringgit at 3.80 per US dollar until 2005. The currency's official English name was the Malaysian dollar until the 1990s.
