1. Metropolitan Transportation Authority

Transportation & Travel · Rail and Transit Abbreviations

New York State public authority that runs the New York City subway and buses, the Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad and several bridges and tunnels, forming the largest public transit system in North America. The subway alone carries several million riders on a typical weekday.

Example: The MTA says the 7 train will run every 12 minutes this weekend because of track work.

Created in the late 1960s to consolidate the region's transit and commuter rail operations. In January 2025 the MTA launched congestion pricing, charging most cars a toll to enter Manhattan below 60th Street, the first such program in the US. Several other agencies share the initials, including Maryland's Transit Administration and, historically, Los Angeles County's transit agency.

2. Mail transfer agent

Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations

Server software that receives email and relays it toward the recipient's mail server using SMTP. Postfix, Exim, Sendmail and Microsoft Exchange all act as MTAs, queuing messages and retrying when a destination is unavailable.

Example: Bounce headers show the message was rejected by the recipient's MTA for failing DMARC.

Email systems are described as chains of agents: the mail user agent (MUA) is the person's app, the MTA moves mail between servers, and the mail delivery agent (MDA) places it in the mailbox. Sendmail, written by Eric Allman in the early 1980s, was the dominant early MTA. In New York and other cities MTA names a transit authority, an unrelated meaning.

3. Material transfer agreement

Law & Legal · Contract Abbreviations

Contract governing the transfer of tangible research materials, such as cell lines, antibodies, plasmids, chemical compounds or mouse strains, between institutions. It limits how the materials may be used and addresses ownership of modifications, publication and rights to resulting inventions.

Example: The lab cannot ship the antibody until both universities' tech transfer offices execute the MTA.

The Uniform Biological Material Transfer Agreement, published in 1995 with National Institutes of Health involvement, simplifies transfers between nonprofit institutions. Industry MTAs are negotiated more heavily, especially over reach-through rights to future inventions. In transit, MTA usually refers to New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

4. Maryland Transit Administration

Transportation & Travel · Rail and Transit Abbreviations

State agency that operates public transit in the Baltimore region, including local buses, the Baltimore Metro Subway, light rail and the MARC commuter trains to Washington, DC.

Example: The MTA's Light RailLink connects BWI airport with downtown Baltimore and Hunt Valley.

Part of the Maryland Department of Transportation and often written MDOT MTA to avoid confusion with New York's agency. Baltimore's single subway line opened in 1983. The canceled Red Line light rail project was revived by the state in 2023.
