MVI stands for Multivitamin infusion, a drug abbreviation.
Injectable multivitamin product, such as Infuvite or M.V.I.-12, added to parenteral nutrition or IV fluids. In conversation the abbreviation is also used for an ordinary oral multivitamin.
Example: Add MVI 10 mL and thiamine 100 mg to the liter of D5NS ("banana bag").
Usage notes
IV multivitamins give "banana bags" their yellow color, from riboflavin. Shortages of adult IV multivitamins have occurred repeatedly, forcing hospitals to ration doses for PN patients. Thiamine is often given separately and before glucose in malnourished or alcohol-dependent patients to prevent Wernicke encephalopathy.
