1. Intelligence quotient
Science & Engineering · Psychology Abbreviations
Standardized score from an intelligence test that compares a person's performance on reasoning, verbal, memory and processing-speed tasks with others of the same age. Modern IQ tests are scaled so the average is 100 and the standard deviation 15, placing about two thirds of people between 85 and 115.
Example: Her full-scale IQ of 132 placed her in the top 2% of children her age.
Alfred Binet and Théodore Simon published the first practical intelligence test in France in 1905 to identify children needing extra help. German psychologist William Stern coined the term Intelligenzquotient in 1912, dividing mental age by chronological age, and Lewis Terman's 1916 Stanford-Binet multiplied the ratio by 100. David Wechsler later introduced today's deviation scoring. Average scores rose about three points per decade during the 20th century, the Flynn effect, so tests are periodically renormed.
