MMM stands for Moist mucous membranes, a patient assessment abbreviation.
Physical exam finding that the inside of the mouth is moist, used as a quick bedside sign of adequate hydration. Dry mucous membranes suggest dehydration.
Example: Mouth: MMM, no lesions; skin turgor normal, cap refill under 2 seconds.
Usage notes
Mouth breathing, oxygen therapy and some medications can dry the mouth regardless of hydration. In children, dry mucous membranes are one of the more useful signs in dehydration scales, together with capillary refill and general appearance. Sometimes written "mmm" in lowercase.
