MAEW stands for Moves all extremities well, a patient assessment abbreviation.
Charting phrase indicating the patient moves both arms and both legs with apparently normal, symmetric strength. It is commonly used in pediatric and nursing neurological checks.
Example: Infant active, MAEW, strong suck, anterior fontanel soft and flat.
Usage notes
"Well" implies symmetry and adequate strength, but a formal grade on the 0 to 5 scale is clearer when neurological change is a concern. Some electronic flowsheets have replaced the phrase with separate strength boxes for each limb.
